2011 has been a big year for our family. Technically it all began last year when our beautiful daughter arrived on 30 December 2010 - a little sister for our two-year-old son. Eight weeks later our family expanded from a family of four to a family of eight. Four Rhode Island Reds were delivered from Barter & Sons at the base of Blue Mountains.

"The Girls" are 'my' chooks when they are laying an egg a day. "The Girls" are my husband's chooks when they decide to jump up on top of their roost and experiment with their clipped wings until they end up in the neighbour's yard. Three times I have had to put our baby under her play gym & go to rescue a chook in the dressing gown with our toddler in tow.

However, more often than not, we have gone out in the mornings, collected the eggs from the laying box and poached a delicious breakfast knowing that the eggs are organic and free range! Our toddler loves our chooks and they have become very tame. We can pick them up and pat them and they'll feed out of our hands. Have you ever seen an egg with mauve speckles? We'll have to look it up in our Chook reference book!
